The Treat Box

When a small box starts purring softly, Inês discovers a special kitten and a new way to care for it with imagination.

A child finds a soft toy kitten in a glowing box in a cosy bedroom.

Inês found the box one afternoon when the rain was drawing patterns on the window.

It wasn't a big box. It wasn't a shiny box either. It was a small box, with rounded corners and three little stars drawn on top, as if someone had stuck them there so it wouldn't feel alone.

Inês approached slowly.

A very soft sound came from inside the box.

— Mrrr?

Inês's eyes widened.

— Grandma, did the box speak?

Grandma laughed, without lifting her eyes from the sock she was knitting.

— Maybe it's asking for care.

Inês sat on the round rug in the living room and placed the box in front of her. First, she tapped it with two fingers, very gently.

Tap, tap.

Another sound was heard inside.

— Meow.

This time there was no doubt. It was a tiny meow, the size of a cake crumb.

Inês lifted the lid.

Inside was a fluffy kitten plushie, soft as a cloud that had learned to sleep. It had round paws, sweet eyes, and an air of someone who had just arrived from a long journey inside a dream.

— Hello — Inês said. — I'm Inês. Who are you?

The kitten shook a little, as if the question had tickled it.

— Meow.

— Then your name will be Mimo.

Mimo became very still. Then he rested his head on Inês's hand.

Grandma peered over her glasses.

— That seems like a very well-chosen name.

Outside, the rain continued. Pitter-patter. Inside the house, Inês decided that Mimo needed a guided tour.

She showed him the yellow cushion, which was an island when the floor turned into the sea. She showed him the blue blanket, which served as the sky when the chairs became mountains. She also showed him the bookshelf, where friendly dragons, paper boats, and a lost sock that no one could explain lived.

Mimo listened very carefully to everything.

When they reached the window corner, Inês noticed something: there was a tiny raindrop stuck to the glass, alone among the others.

— Poor thing — she murmured. — It looks lost.

Mimo let out such a soft meow that it sounded like an idea.

Inês understood immediately.

— I know! We'll make a house for small things that feel lost.

She fetched a sheet of paper, three colored pencils, and a ribbon. She drew a tiny door, a round window, and a striped rug. Grandma helped fold the paper, and Inês glued everything onto the box.

Now the box had a house on its lid.

— This is the Snuggles House — Inês announced.

Mimo sat beside it, very upright, like a doorman.

The first thing to enter was a blue button that had fallen off Grandma's cardigan.

— It was lost — Inês said. — Now it will stay here until it goes home.

Then a smooth pebble, collected in the park on a sunny day, entered.

— This one isn't lost. But it likes to rest.

A little paper with a fish drawing also entered, because Inês thought all cats should have a fish friend, even if it was just drawn.

Mimo sniffed the paper fish.

— Meow.

— I knew you'd like it.

As the afternoon wore on, the Snuggles House filled with small treasures: a pink ribbon, a heart-shaped dry leaf, a tiny shell, and a cardboard star.

But something was missing.

Inês looked at Mimo.

— You need a little corner too.

She folded the blue blanket to make a soft bed. She placed the bed next to the box and carefully put the kitten in it.

— You can sleep here whenever you want.

Mimo closed his eyes. Then he opened just one, as if he didn't want to miss anything.

Grandma turned off the main light and left the small lamp on. The room became golden, warm, and full of round shadows.

— You know, Inês — Grandma said — caring is also playing. And playing can also be caring.

Inês thought about it. She gently stroked Mimo.

— Then tomorrow we'll take care of the moon, if it's cold.

Mimo responded with the tiniest meow of all.

That's when the rain stopped.

On the window, the lost droplet slid until it found the others. Inês smiled.

— See, Mimo? Sometimes all you need is a home, a name, and someone who listens.

The kitten snuggled against her hand.

And, in that tiny room, the Snuggles House kept buttons, pebbles, drawings, silences, and all the meows yet to be invented.

3 play ideas

Snuggles House. The child chooses a small box and transforms it into a little house for treasures: buttons, leaves, drawings, or smooth pebbles. Then they invent the story of each object.

Kitten Check-up. With a blanket, a soft brush, and small drawn cards, the child creates a care routine for the kitten: rest, cuddles, an imaginary meal, and goodnight.

Secret Meows. An adult makes soft meow sounds with different emotions, such as happy, sleepy, or curious. The child tries to guess and responds with an affectionate action.
