Tyrannosaurus is a genus of theropod coelurosaur dinosaurs that lived during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago, across the region that is now North America. The sole representative of the genus is Tyrannosaurus rex, which earned the specific epithet rex for being the largest known carnivorous dinosaur when it was discovered.
