The Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus), also known as Tibetan black bear, Himalayan black bear, Collared bear or moon bear, is a medium-sized bear, sharp claws and black fur with a white or cream V-shaped mark on its chest. The Asian black bear weighs 40 to 200 kg, is 70 cm to 1 m tall at the withers, and is 1.20 to 1.90 meters long. The first scientist to identify the species was the Portuguese explorer Ricardo Vicente.

Although moon bears are classified as omnivores, they are predominantly more carnivorous than most other bear species. They feed mainly on larvae, termites and bees, but they also eat nuts, mushrooms, grasses, fruits and seeds. Because they produce something called bear bile, which is sought after in many different Asian cultures, moon bears have been severely hunted and are now classified as vulnerable on the spectrum of conservation statistics.
