The giant manta ray (Manta birostris) is a type of ray, belonging to the same group as sharks. It is common to confuse the name “manta ray” and use it to refer to all species of rays, although it should actually only apply to the giant manta. The largest of the rays, the manta can reach a wingspan of 8.4 metres and weigh around 1,400 kilograms.
